Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing
EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to focus briefly on a traumatic memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements). This process reduces the vividness and emotional intensity of the memory—allowing the brain to reprocess it in a healthier, more adaptive way.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an extensively researched and widely used therapy for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other distressing life experiences. It has helped thousands of people move past painful memories and return to a sense of calm, clarity, and control.
Watch this brief video to better understand how EMDR works.
Why it Works
When we experience trauma, our brain can sometimes store that experience in a “frozen” state—trapping the memory and the emotional response together. EMDR helps “unfreeze” that memory so it can be safely processed and moved into long-term memory, where it no longer causes the same emotional distress.
Think of it like untangling a knot in your nervous system—one memory at a time.
